Mumbai Water Reserves Surge as Modak Sagar Lake Overflows, Seven Reservoirs Reach 69.74% Capacity Amid Heavy Rains

Mumbai’s water reserves have reached 69.74 per cent capacity as Modak Sagar Lake overflows during heavy monsoon rains. BMC confirms rising storage levels across seven reservoirs, with Vihar, Tulsi, Tansa, and Modak Sagar overflowing. Continuous rainfall has brought significant relief to Mumbai’s water supply situation, with the combined storage level of the city’s seven reservoirs rising to 69.74 per cent of their total capacity, according to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). The civic body reported that water storage increased by 7.84 per cent within the last 24 hours, strengthening the city’s drinking water reserves.

Modak Sagar Lake, one of the key sources supplying drinking water to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation area, began overflowing at around 2:07 am on Thursday. The BMC confirmed that Modak Sagar is the fourth lake to overflow during the current monsoon season. Earlier, Vihar, Tulsi, and Tansa lakes had also reached overflow levels.

“Modak-Sagar Lake, one of the seven lakes supplying drinking water to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation area, started overflowing at around 2:07 AM on Thursday night,” the BMC stated in a post on X.

The maximum water storage capacity of Modak Sagar Lake is 12,892.5 crore litres, equivalent to 1,28,925 million litres. The BMC stated that continuous rainfall has led to a rapid rise in reservoir water levels, creating a positive outlook for Mumbai’s drinking water availability in the coming period.

As per the Hydraulic Engineer’s Department report issued at 6:00 am on July 23, 2026, the live storage across Mumbai’s seven reservoirs stood at 10,09,432 million litres, against the total combined capacity of 14,47,363 million litres. The overall water storage level was recorded at 69.74 per cent of the total capacity.

The reservoirs that have overflowed during the ongoing monsoon season include Vihar, Tulsi, Tansa, and Modak Sagar.

Meanwhile, the BMC informed that the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an Orange Alert for the Greater Mumbai area, predicting heavy to very heavy rainfall on July 23, 2026. The civic body has advised citizens to remain alert and strictly follow instructions issued by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation and Mumbai Police from time to time.

The BMC has also appealed to residents to immediately contact the emergency helpline number 1916 in case of any emergency. With four major reservoirs now overflowing and overall storage nearing 70 per cent capacity, Mumbai’s water supply situation has witnessed a major improvement amid the ongoing heavy rainfall.
